A Weekend Filled with Weddings

Hello everyone — today I will be telling you about all the Sikh weddings (Anand Karaj) I have recently attended. These weddings have five parts to them — the paath, jaago, mayain/chooran, the wedding, and the reception.

Jasjit didi and Dilkaranjot Veerji

The first wedding I will be telling you about is Jasjit didi and Dilkaranjot Veerji. They got married last year in September. I was so excited because this was the first wedding I ever attended. The first event was the paath where you do prayers for the bride and groom. We went to the bride’s house and listened to our holy scriptures. The second event was the jaago — this is the event where you dance and celebrate that the bride is getting married. Both the bride and the groom will have a separate jaago. At this event we prepared a special dance to perform for the bride, and the ladies sang for the bride as well.

The third event was to put Mehndi (Henna) where Jasjit got henna on her hands and feet. At this event she also put her chooran on which are her bangles that she is going to wear for the wedding and even for some time after the wedding. The next day was the main event — the wedding. My family and I went to the Gurdwara in the morning to attend the wedding. I saw that the bride and groom were looking very nice. After Karan and Jasjit came in they had the ceremony of 4 lavaans (laps) around the Guru Granth Sahib Ji (our holy scripture). After that was done we congratulated them and got a picture with the newly wedded couple. Also the last event, the reception was postponed due to Covid-19. On July third 2021 was their reception where we got to see their baby photos, which was a lot of fun.

Jasmin and Ikbir

The next and last wedding that I attended was Jasmin and Ikbir. They got married just this past weekend and now I will tell you a little about them. At the paath we listened to the prayers and holy hymns. Then was the jaago — we had so much fun while dancing and had Indian sweets and savory treats. The next day was to put the chooran (bangles) and they again had an assortment of yummy treats for us to choose from. Then came the wedding day where the beautiful bride and groom got married. They did the 4 lavaans (laps) around the Guru Granth Sahib Ji and we then blessed them and clicked a photo with the newly wedded couple.
