Week 32 – Looking Back on Summer Shadowing at The EyeSite

Catch-up entry for 2026-08-26; written in October 2026. Reflections may refer to earlier experiences.

This summer, I shadowed at The EyeSite in Seattle. Although my main career interest is dentistry, spending time in another healthcare setting gave me a different starting point for thinking about patient care.

Exploring Beyond One Career

It can be easy to focus so much on one goal that every experience has to match it exactly. I want to leave room for curiosity, too. Exploring eye care gives me a reason to ask what different healthcare professions share and what makes each one distinct.

The questions I am taking from this experience are bigger than a single specialty: How does a provider explain something unfamiliar? What helps someone feel comfortable asking a question? How do science and communication work together?

Bringing Those Questions Back to Dentistry

As I reflect on shadowing, I keep returning to the kind of dentist I hope to become. I want to understand the science, but I also want to explain it in language people can use.

My summer at The EyeSite belongs in this journal because exploring healthcare more broadly is part of exploring dentistry. I do not have to have every answer yet. For now, I can pay attention, stay curious, and let new settings give me better questions.
