Week 38 – Why Communication Belongs Beside Science

Catch-up entry for 2026-10-07; written in October 2026. Reflections may refer to earlier experiences.

Dentistry attracts me because it combines science with work that affects people directly. As I keep exploring that goal, I want to give communication as much attention in this journal as the scientific topics.

Explaining Something Clearly

Knowing a term is different from being able to explain it. If I write about enamel, bacteria, or prevention, I want a reader to understand the main idea without needing to take the same classes I do.

That is a useful challenge for me as a student. When I struggle to explain something simply, it can show me where my own understanding needs more work.

Making Room for Questions

The communication I hope to practice also includes being approachable. I want to make room for someone to say that an explanation did not make sense, or that they have another concern.

Thinking about my summer shadowing gives these goals a place in my career exploration. I am not only asking which subjects I need to study. I am asking which habits of communication I want to develop.

For now, I can practice through writing and everyday conversations: choose clearer words, listen carefully, and be willing to explain an idea again.
