Week 6 – What I'm Learning About Dentistry as a Student
I have been studying dentistry for several years now, and I’ve been able to gain insight into what it takes to be an effective dentist. The most obvious thing that I’ve noticed is that there is a large theme of science, skill, and patient care in dentistry. A dentist will fix someone’s teeth, but to be a competent dentist, you need to understand how the body operates as a whole and the reason why a patient may have an issue; you also need to give them a sense of confidence or well being.
I’ve been particularly fascinated by the variety of procedures dentists perform, from routine cleanings and fillings to more complex treatments like root canals or orthodontics. Each procedure requires careful planning and attention to detail. Even observing how dentists interact with patients has taught me the importance of communication and trust — a procedure can go smoothly only if the patient feels comfortable and informed.
I have also learned that the field of dentistry is always evolving; new advancements (digital x-rays, laser treatments, etc.) have allowed for quicker and more accurate means of providing patients with treatment. I am excited to see how science and technology will continue to evolve and change how we will be providing patients with care.
The other thing I’m learning is the amount of time it takes to become a dentist, which includes years of schooling, hands on practice, and a commitment. When I look at all of the lives dentists change — taking away pain and increasing a person’s confidence — I know it’s worth it!
